Two languages: from regional to global

Geo, the 11 years old boy, observes the birth of one of the largest tree in the Amazon. The seed bud of the kapok tree, known in the regios as 'samaumeira' (Ceiba pentandra) shows the mystery of life and invites for a reflection.

1. The singing of a rare bird, the hooting of the rain coming, the howling of the guariba, the silence of the canoe sliding on the water, jaraqui with flour, insatiable curiosity, the revealing feeling ... here comes the Amazonian world. This is your culture, this is the culture that delighted visitors come to know.

To talk only with feeling would be enough in the Amazon, where "feel" is the greatest tool of knowledge, but many mixtures have happened, now there is also the rational procedure, studies and researches of a region that demands it urgently.

Why is it wiser to go back to the village? It is to take back the power over our food, health, time and the joy of living, is what has already been defined as community empowerment*. And how are we going to return to the village? We have to study everything again, make decisions, learn to plant, recognize plants, prepare medicines, generate resources. After an education founded on selfishness, solitary and even predatory, the time came for solidarity education and ecological literacy*.

Traditional communities* or intentional communities* seek their way and inspiration is abundant, like everything in the Amazon: archaeological dark earth*, new dark earth*, Xingu civilization*...

The new face of the villages is inspired to the ancient people and adapted to the times, connected by internet, offering scientific tourism*, bird watching*, Amazonian cuisine* ... the village discovers the beneficial side of the global.     0480

2. The regional is fundamental and has a very marked presence, and even desired, in the Amazoniapedia project. Especially bioregionalism* is an essential tool in community empowerment: "think globally and act locally".

Despite the negative connotations that the global has been acquiring since the industrial revolution there is an interesting dynamic between the regional and the global when both establish a process of balance. The infamous globalization that has imposed itself on the world scene, sucks the regional as a parasite and globalizes with purely commercial purposes. However, in a global vision of social and cultural inspiration, we realize the value of identifying our own regional culture and its ability to interact with other cultures.

Inspiration also emerges strongly in the political sphere. The Xinguan people, besides being expert farmers, capable of feeding thousands of villagers with agroforestry* techniques and intensive management of an exuberant forest, had an impressive system of government from our point of view.

This is what the archaelogical researches can deduce. Here is the excerpt from a recent publication with the collaboration of several scientists: Anthropogenic Amazon, organized by Marcos Pereira Magalhães.     0483

3. "In the neotropical Amazonian societies, centralization of power and the monopoly of political relations were overcome by divergent and centrifugal collective movements,

Outward (divergent) movements favored a broad social and eco-tropic network, which consolidated the spectacular anthropogenesis of Amazonian ecosystems. The biodiversity of cultural ecosystems has been maintained or expanded to the needs of the human populations that have explored it. In addition, by allowing the territorial mobilization of a large part of the native populations, the social order of the Amazonian populations favored inter-ethnic exchanges, lack of political boundaries, non-revolutionary control of traditional governance, permanent state balance and convergence to the same common interterritorial pattern. And it is precisely this structural feature of the political organization of Amazonian societies that plays the role of monument in Brazilian archeology: not the pyramid, the column or the tower; But the centrifugation in the state order of society that balanced any and all excess of central power in the name of a collective and free social order."(Anthropogenic Amazon, organized by Marcos Pereira Magalhães).     0481

4. It is worth emphasizing again that inspiration is abundant and available: it is to stick your hand in the mass, study and experience on earth. Create new forms of social interaction.

The Amazoniapedia project wants to rescue those knowledge and contribute to the creation of a fairer, healthier and festive society.

The bilingual option of the site was optimized with a double purpose: on the one hand to encourage the Portuguese-speaking reader to research the English terminology of the subjects dealt with and on the other to encourage the English-speaking reader to know regional terms and expressions.

It is not by chance that the indigenous peoples had their own dialects and a general language.

In short, be it the reader of one language or another, he is encouraged to explore the other language.

This applies the initial concept of the bioregional dynamics that thinks globally and acts locally.     0014
